Starting from the start 014. Recycling Concrete from Slump Tests

When collecting materials on site, the META Design team works like they’ve switched on a “material radar,” scanning for overlooked resources that might be reused. This time, they noticed something few people pay attention to—the concrete slump test.

Before pouring, every batch of concrete must go through a slump test to record its consistency. But once tested, that concrete can’t be put back into the truck—it simply becomes waste. META Design saw potential in this, and back in their studio, they built a mold with an idea in mind: to turn leftover slump-test concrete into the countertop surface in 1.0.

Making it happen required layers of coordination. Our construction colleagues spoke with the site manager, checked with quality control, coordinated with the subcontractor, and even worked with the truck drivers, until finally the design team was able to stand on site during a pour and collect the “discarded” concrete.

At the site, the designers hand-poured the test concrete into their molds. The unusual sight quickly caught the attention of the workers. Some gathered around to give advice, others rolled up their sleeves to help. As they poured and shaped the mix together, it felt less like a task and more like a small experimental show—an unexpected experience of collaboration that everyone shared.
