Starting from the start 013. Behind the Making – Loveseats in the Common Area

The main material for the loveseats came from the Taipei Dome construction site: an A-frame scaffold. This type of scaffold is uncommon, usually found only on large public works projects where it serves as a temporary safety barrier. When we brought META Design to the site to collect materials, the site manager reminded us: “If you don’t take it today, it may be gone tomorrow.” Even though we weren’t sure at the time how it could be reused, the team decided to bring it back because of its unique character.

After some time observing and experimenting, the team realized its form was perfectly suited for a sofa frame. With only slight modifications, the scaffold could be cut to create a comfortable reclining angle. Reclaimed wooden formworks were then added to form the backrest and seat. For the connections, the team used scaffold clamps—an intentional choice that not only preserved the original identity of the material, but also allowed the final piece to naturally express the structural language of the construction site.
