Starting from the start 006. Behind the Making —Preserving the Traces or Not?

When working with reclaimed materials from construction sites, one key question META Design faced was whether to preserve the visible marks of past use.

Take reclaimed wooden formwork as an example. After several rounds of concrete pouring, traces of cement often remain on the surface, lodged in cracks and holes. These panels could be completely planed down and restored—turned into furniture or objects that appear brand new. But to META Design, such treatment also erases the traces of use—removing the clues that reveal the material’s history and origin.

Balancing aesthetics, function, and storytelling, the team sought a thoughtful approach. They carefully removed any concrete residue that might affect comfort or safety, ensuring a smooth and usable surface. But the marks hidden in joints and cavities—those that didn’t interfere with use—were intentionally preserved. These subtle details act as gentle reminders: the wood carries the memory of another life.
