January 28, 2021, marked an important milestone for Construction Waste Upcycling Project 1.0. That evening, the first shared workspace of the office renovation officially moved in.
Within the company, colleagues had already heard for some time that the space would be built from construction waste. There was anticipation—but also uncertainty. For us, it was a commitment that had to be delivered.
Six months earlier, the FG Next team had visited the META Design studio in Tamsui for the first time. That visit allowed us to truly see how discarded resources could be transformed into something meaningful. It aligned closely with the conversations FG Next had been having for more than two years around architectural sustainability. When we shared the background of FG Next, the issues we care about, and the idea of using the 16th-floor shared space as an experimental site, META Design understood that this was not a one-off commission. It was a company choosing to test new approaches within its own workplace.
From confirming the collaboration to completing the space, the process took over four months. During that time, there were no complete 3D renderings to preview the final result, and no previous examples to follow. The construction team and designers went back and forth over details. Site colleagues brought designers to construction sites, coordinated material collection, and arranged logistics. Moving forward amid uncertainty became routine. Building mutual trust became essential.

On the night of installation, we stayed on site, watching the design team bring in each piece of furniture—recovered from construction sites, transformed, and now returning in a new form. Materials once scattered across different sites gradually came together to form a shared space. As dawn approached, the space finally took shape. In that moment, we knew that the months of communication, questioning, and pressure had found their answer.
This shared space became the first tangible site where FG Next’s ideas of sustainability and sharing were realized, and it marked the beginning of the Construction Waste Upcycling Project. Looking back, that night was not just about completing an installation. It was about taking a meaningful step within our own workplace.
The “Starting from the start” series records this journey. As time moves forward, it allows us to look back at our choices and original intentions—and to remind ourselves why we chose this path.
