005. Behind the Making — The 1st Chair made from wood formwork

After overcoming the technical challenge of bending the formwork, bringing the Formwork Chair to life still required a series of design and production steps. META Design began with a full-scale 1:1 layout drawing to define the chair’s proportions, structural layout, and joinery methods. Once the design was finalized, they used the prepared formwork wood to build the first prototype. By actually sitting on the chair, they could test whether the overall dimensions and ergonomics felt right—Was the backrest high enough to support the body? Was the seat angle comfortable? After several rounds of refinement, they arrived at the ideal proportions and finalized the design of three different versions of the Formwork Chair. These pieces continued the original concept of “bending the formwork into a seat.” Through the technique of kerf-cutting, the once-rigid material was given a sense of flexibility—both visually and structurally. At the same time, the design retained the original structural language of the formwork: offcuts were used for the base supports, while the seat and backrest were assembled from the flat panels. The result is a cohesive design that thoughtfully responds to and extends the identity of the original material.
